Opportunity Found

So I know it has been a while since I’ve updates, however the trials of everyday life gets the best of us sometimes. Regardless, here I am and ready to give some incite about where I am in terms of my future in Graphic Design.

To start things off, I’ve found an incredible internship opportunity through tanQ (www.tanQ.us). I’m am helping Judy Tan (founder of tanQ) in many areas of design that will utilized all that I have learned throughout my years of college. It feels like the perfect fit for me not only in terms of using my skills, but also helping out non-profit organizations. I’ve always wanted to find something to help make this world a better place, and I feel tanQ has the right tools.

I have about 3 weeks left in the term, and after this, I will have 5 classes left in my 8 years worth of studies. I am seeing fellow students venture off into their own paths, and it has made me proud to have an opportunity to cross paths with them.

With that said, there is still a lot for me to learn, and it just gets more exciting as time flies by.

Blogging on the Lightrail

So here I am, heading onto what could be my last fall term ever from college. Sitting on the Max gives me time to reflect what I’ve done and what I am going to do in the future.

Of course, the big thing for me has to be my lack of involvement within the Graphic Design community. This has to be where I turn that around. I do enjoy what I do within this field, and the projects people work on are truly incredible displays of talent. I need to grasp this.

Another topic that crosses my mind is how much I’ve improved thanks to all of the people surrounded by me (teachers and student, friends and family). I’ve had a great deal of support which pushes me to continue doing great things in my life. I am happy where I’m headed, and of course I know there is plenty for me to improve on.

These are just a few of many reflections I have as I speed along the lightrails. Typically, thinking about these generate some but, but putting it out there lets me revisit my thought process and helps me stay on track (no pun intended…maybe).

Social Media Vacation (Sort of) And Creatively Flowing

So as the summer term ended, I took the liberty to stay away from the computer (for the most part…damn youse facebook!) and just get inspired by the world around me and get influenced by the people abroad. And, I’ve got to say, it’s been great! For example, there was one day, where me, my friend, and her younger sister went to Rocky Butte (a large hill), brought a whole mess of acrylic paints, papers, pizza, and what-have-you, and just painted. At first, I just sketched what I saw, which was so-so. I have to admit, it did feel good having a pencil and a paper at my grasp for general sketching (i.e. get the rust out).

But then, my imagination got the best of me, and I got a fresh piece of paper, and went straight for the paints. The result was a creepy garden gnome. Now, honestly, I have no idea where he came from, but if I were to guess, it was from the depths of my imagination. And for sure, he wasn’t as resolved as I had hoped, but it was good to see this creepy little guy get captured on paper.

So, where am I going with this? Basically, just take a break from the computer screen (you know who you are), and do something creative with your hands. Hell, it doesn’t have to be with your hands. But capture moments that this world has to offer, and inspiration will come to you like that. And if not, feel free to get back to that computer and browse the endless arts via online galleries. Either way, it’s all up to you.

So here I am, with my last few days off before my fall term starts. I feel fully rested, ready, and willing to push myself even more than I have before. Here’s hoping to a great fall for not only myself, but everyone else out there living creatively.

The Creative Mind and Our Potential

So as I work through my senior portfolio and my past pieces, I’ve felt like I’ve come a long way. I remember when first working on these pieces thinking “I could do better.” And upon completing those pieces, I was happy, yeah, but that yearning to further improve what I’ve done always lingered.

Fast-forward to today, and I am revising these pieces. Between then and now, I’ve seen some improvements on my perception of design. Of course still not at the level I want to be at, however, it is a turn in the right direction. But with that realization, I’ve noticed that no matter what, day by day, I will continue to get better. I mean, it’s common sense really. You do something over and over again, and then you’ll get better at it. Just as long as you set your mind to that goal.

So sitting here with that ideal, I’ve stumbled onto a video. It is Ira Glass on his perception of our roles as storytellers and the struggles that EVERYONE faces in the creative world.

Ira Glass on Storytelling from David Shiyang Liu on Vimeo.

Ira Glass is right. I see many people within the Graphic Design program struggle, feeling as there is no room for improvement. I am guilty of thinking like that. Fortunately, I’ve overcome that sensation.

Working within the creative industry in general, is a challenge. For we must convince others to gain emotion from our work. We must attract. We must gain attention. All these aspects and more, just from our mind. We all have that, and we all see the outcome. But to put that out there in the world, is the struggle.

Better Late Than Never

Alright, so I am in year 7 of my college studies, and I am just starting to document my school years. I am approximately one year away from graduating, so this school portion of my blog may be short lived. So lets begin!

I am a 25 year old student who has been brought up in Portland, Oregon and finding that passion in Graphic Design. Why graphic design? Love of computers, love of art in general? Pretty much! There is so much to the field, I feel as if working in this industry will not give me a boring day when I’m out there working. Sure, up to this point, it’s been a tough road, dealing with my fair share of heartaches in my designs, but you know? it’s all a learning experience!

Trust me, my instructor Kate informed me that students may hit that slump where dealing with the graphic design career path, and I believe I have (more than once). But, with that said, I’ve overcome that slump, and continue to push. I want to make that push to create incredible designs, and just to enjoy life in general. And you know what? So far, so good! So til next time, keep that chin up, and I’ll see you down the design/life trail.
